Practical guide
Using the Environment File Parser
Parse .env assignments and flag malformed or duplicate keys.
Example
Input
NODE_ENV=development
PORT=3000Expected result
Two parsed key-value rows: NODE_ENV → development; PORT → 3000.Supported inputs
- One KEY=value assignment per line.
- Optional export prefixes, blank lines, comments, and single- or double-quoted values.
Limitations
- This is a lightweight parser and does not expand variables or implement every dotenv quoting/escape rule.
- Do not paste production secrets on shared or public devices.
Frequently asked questions
Are duplicate keys reported?
Yes. The parser reports the later duplicate and identifies the first line where that key appeared.
Does it resolve values such as ${HOST}?
No. Variable expansion is not performed; values are inspected as text.
